At Arizona State University, a unique rock band class is shaping the next generation of musicians. Joseph Felice, who is the instructor of this course, is cultivating an environment where students hone their performance skills, collaborate with fellow band members, and inject fresh talent into the local music landscape.
Felice's class emphasizes rehearsal, peer feedback, and public performances. "The key objectives are learning to become reliable, support your band, and improve musicianship through repeated practice," he explains.
The course not only fosters musical growth but also addresses some of the challenges emerging musicians face. "It's gotta be hard to make a living doing music," Felice says, noting the prevalence of multi-tasking musicians who often balance full-time jobs with their passion.
Seth McCutchen, a fifth-year student and bassist, attests to the class's value in teaching collaborative musicianship. "You can learn how to play on your own, but playing with others is its own thing, which you learn here," McCutchen shares.
Most of McCutchen's musical activities revolve around campus, but he occasionally explores the local scene. Finding time to meet and jam with other musicians can be tough, but the class mandates it, ensuring consistent practice. McCutchen's insights reflect the greater challenge many small musicians face: syncing schedules to create music together.
The class also serves as a springboard to venues like the Nile Theater, which McCutchen praises for its intimate yet spacious atmosphere. It is places like these that offer a personal experience to both artists and audiences, fostering a sense of community within Phoenix's music scene.
Felice and McCutchen's perspectives highlight the dual role education plays in nurturing individual skills and contributing to the broader musical community. The rock band class at ASU is more than just a credit on a transcript; it's a vital component of Phoenix's musical ecosystem, equipping students with the tools to perform confidently.
